How to Save Energy at Home:
.) Computer: Most of us probably do not switch off our monitors even after we shut down the computer...that is IF we shut down the computer. Keep the monitor and the computer switched off when you are not using them. Start practicing this even when at work. You will help save valuable energy and some money too.
.) Light bulbs: I'm sure you've seen the commercials for compact fluorescent light (CFL) bulbs. But you may or may not have tried them yet. Yes..they are more expensive than a traditional light bulb, BUT they use much less power than a traditional bulb and they last much longer! As a power-saving measure, start using the CFL light bulbs as much as you can.
.) Thermostat: Keeping your thermostat set at to just comfortable, instead of very comfortable is very cost effective. Don't keep your thermostat set at 70 degrees in the summer because it feels really good...but rather set it at 72 or 73 degrees. And the reverse is true for the winter months. Also, check to see if you have your fan set to "on" or "auto". Keeping it "on" all the time uses more energy than you think.
.) Washing Machines and Dryers: An obvious tip is to only do the laundry when you have a full load...don't bother doing small loads. Also, maybe try using a clothes line to dry your clothes when the weather is permitting. Avoiding your dryer if possible, will really cut down on your homes energy consumption.
.) Television and other small appliance: Simply unplug them when not in use. You may be surprised at how much power they consume while not being used.
.) Refrigerator: Bring hot food to room temperatures before putting it into the refrigerator. You can also save power by taking cold or frozen food out of the refrigerator much before the mealtime, thereby saving power in heating it.
